Emotiv EPOC Brain Activity Map

This application displays a real-time map of your mental activity in four significant brainwave frequency bands. Adjustable gain allows you to see detailed information and relative strengths between different brain regions. Adjustable buffer size allows you to see instant responses or average activity over longer periods.

Delta (0.5-4Hz)
- indicating deep sleep, restfulness, and conversely excitement or agitation when delta waves are suppressed

Theta (4-8Hz) - indicating deep meditative states, daydreaming and automatic tasks

Alpha (8-15Hz) - indicating relaxed alertness, restful and meditative states

Beta (15-30Hz) - indicating wakefulness, alertness, mental engagement and conscious processing of information.

Compatible with the Emotiv EPOC consumer headset and SDK developer and research headsets.

I had the good fortune of training to do neurofeedback. What is interesting is how quickly you can learn some pretty useful techniques.
For example: people with endogenous depression are likely to have more alpha waves on the left than the right. Whereas, most people have more alpha on the right. It doesn't take more than a few successful trials of thinking about something that makes you happy and watching the alpha on the right increase to learn how to make this happen. The next step is to learn how to do this at will without even the happy thought. In a few successful efforts people can learn how to turn on happiness at will. Finally, people can learn to quit depressing themselves and turn on happiness.
Even though this is a simple device and a simple display basic techniques like this are remarkably effective and helpful.

Hi Robert,
At the moment you get an activity map of your brain in real time in the 4 major bands - delta, theta, alpha, beta - and these can be used for biofeedback although the app is not designed with all the bells and whistles of a typical biofeedback program. Sounds like a developer opportunity smile:)
The EPOC certainly runs on Mac machines running Bootcamp and some emulators - I think Parallels works but don't quote me. Some of th eMac guys might help out here?

What I'm wondering is how the EPOC/Brain Map combination would compare to more traditional (and way more expensive) Biofeedback EEG machines used in the treatment of ADD, mood disorders, brainhacking, etc. The screenshots depict areas of greater activity, are there other ways to view information in this application?

If the EPOC can offer similar therapeutic results, that would be a huge empowerment for those looking to gain better control over their own brain.

Will your software work on a Mac emulating windows? Is there anywhere on the East Coast where one might try out a headset? I'm just about ready to click "buy."

and part (b) is to help train your memory? Sorry, couldn't resist smile;)

I think the potential for biofeedback applications is huge - from learning to meditate or relax to learning how to avoid anxiety and mild depression. You're definitely on the money there! Thanks for your comments and please excuse my sense of humour smile:)

Actually there are several applications for the "application".

First is the tuning of the instrument. Seeing how it works, etc ...

Second ... and the reason I am getting it ... is two part.
a) mental training as mentioned earlier. There are applications which utilize simple features of this headgear to encourage a waking state, a relaxed state, to control urges (cig smoking) etc. This general realm of biofeedback is very exciting to me and this would be the most thorough system I've used yet. (Still waiting for the product -- though I am very familiar with the technology) and I'm excited.

Warmly,

Ms. Rouen Sterling CDO Cæl Corp.
