Allan Snyder is an internationally recognized scientist. For the past twenty years, he has concentrated his energies on the field of neuroscience. In 2003, he made a major scientific contribution by demonstrating that it is possible to access the non-conscious mind by turning off the conscious mind using trans-cranial magnetic stimulation. He was also the first to describe the way light travels along optical fibres, thereby paving the way for today's worldwide telecommunications network. This historically significant contribution earned him the 2001 Marconi International Prize, the "foremost prize in communication and information technology."

Allan also received the 1997 International Australia Prize, the 1996 Massey Prize and medal of the British Institute of Physics, the Thomas Rankin Lyle medal of the Australian Academy of Sciences (its highest award in physics and mathematics), the Sutherland Memorial medal of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences, the CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement, the Edgeworth David medal of the Royal Society of New South Wales, and the Silver Jubilee medal of the Royal Society of Victoria.

Allan is a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Sciences, and a Fellow of the Optical Society of America. He has a DSc degree from the University of London, a PhD from University College London, a MS degree from Harvard University, and an SM degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is also the Foundation Head of the Optical Sciences Centre and Foundation Director of the Centre for the Mind. He holds the chair of Visual Sciences and the chair of Optical Physics. And in honor of his practical achievements, he was elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.

He has been awarded various fellowships, including the Simon Guggenheim fellowship at Yale University and the Royal Society of London Guest Research Fellowship at Cambridge University. He served on the 1977 Marconi International award committee, evaluating outstanding scientific achievement. And he is a former associate editor of the Optical Sciences of America.

Allan has published 260 papers in various refereed international journals, as well as a number of books. His book Photoreceptor Optics, written with R. Menzel, defined a new area of the visual sciences, and the comprehensive Optical Waveguide Theory, which he wrote with J.D.Love, is now available in both Chinese and Russian.
