Of detections and temperature:

Of detections and temperature: Pushing the threshold in forum Emotiv EPOC.
Hi,

I am a undergraduate student looking forward with great anticipation to my future purchase of the Emotiv’s EPOC headset, and the development of a project relating education, psychology and computer science.

I have thoroughly read through most of the exiting works&questions done by various members of this forum, and have not yet found satisfying answers to a few of my questions.

1-How does Emotiv actually does the detections of emotions? (whatever more technical information is open to us besides the basic “capture of electric signal’s fr om X part of the brain”). My intention is determine the most effective situations for the capturing of such emotions, and wh ere the line must be drawn between good and cluttered emotions data collection. I understand I could do the research myself but you guys have surely done this extensively, and I thought you might be willing to share some of the studies (or at least results) with us gamers, researchers and future/current scientists. Any and all information shared is appreciated. (PM is ok too)

2-Which brings me to my next question which in a way is an extention of the previous. How reliably can I detect emotions from person to person(without facial expression)?

I have read that this is not done the same way as the PUSH, PULL actions and etc, since that (push&pull)seems to be just looking for consistency rather than the actual thought of pushing or pulling. Is this correct?

3-And my last question for the time being, how much heat can the headset go through without compromising signals, and the device itself. Say for example the headset is being used in a dry sauna (Let’s say we can ignore the sweetyness issue for now to focus on temperature tolerance)?

Thank you so much

Research or Education edition?

Research or Education edition? Which edition do I need to get? in forum Emotiv EPOC.
I'm a researcher in the School of Physics at the University of Nottingham, UK. I would like to perform experiments using one of your headsets. I would only need a single license, and it would not be used for educational or commercial purposes. As such, can I buy the research edition rather than the more expensive education edition (which I probably can't afford).
Hi,
i had heard about this product awhile ago, but i only recently has enough money to purchase a developer sdk kit. The talk at the TED conference has only cemented my curiosity in this product.

Now for some quick questions. I have just ordered a kit as above, and would like to know if / when i can download the electronic software associated with the developer edition.
Second, what kind of wireless does this run off (WiFi / bluetooth), and would i have to buy the extra equipment to pick up the wireless signals. (I have a bluetooth dongle currently)

One other thought is that i am currently studying computer science at my university in australia, with a major in multimedia and game development, and would like to know what the current stage for some of the development in the area is.

I hope to stay in this community for a long time, and to also get to know the members of this community.

Thanks in advance,
hassifa

More questions (RF/Wireless related)

More questions (RF/Wireless related) How likely am I to see this setup interfere with the Epoc? in forum Emotiv EPOC.
For my Masters project I have been toying with a number of ideas related to what I am calling "pendulum PCs"...basically the idea of a wearable computer that would sit around your neck ala "sixth sense". Its only been recently that I've been giving some serious thought to looking at the EPOC and the thought just hit me...I'm going to have quite a lot of RF traffic flying around me, namely :

Epoc Headset.
Mobile broadband (GSM/HSDPA)
2x ez430 (868 Mhz)
Bluetooth.

Plus any RF from (backpack) PC and output devices.

So I have to ask the question here - how sensitive is the Epoc to interference and are there any "red flags" there in terms of devices not playing well with the Epoc?

Tia Lee

Research SDK EEG output

Research SDK EEG output in forum Emotiv SDK.
Hi,
I am currently in the process of deciding whether to upgrade my developer sdk kit to a research sdk kit for a small project that i am doing for a university subject. This would revolve around how the brain works in-conjunction with performing specific tasks. The main problem i am encountering at the moment, is that i have no idea on the format of the EEG data that is provided with the research sdk.

Is there a place where i can see how the EEG data is stored and represented? I know that the page shows what the research sdk can provide, but for the project, i would like to know if the raw EEG data can be used for what we are thinking of.

So basically, how is the EEG data stored, and how can it be represented? Is it just a series of numbers over an array of sensors? or can it be visually mapped onto a picture of a pseudo brain to indicate what the sensors are picking up?

Thanks in advance,
Christopher

Windows Form to show active Cognitiv action: How hard can it be ...

Windows Form to show active Cognitiv action: How hard can it be ... C# .NET Cognitiv in forum Emotiv SDK.
I'm trying to do something simple. Or, so I believe.

I'm trying to use C# to make a Windows form that shows which Cognitiv action I'm thinking, along with the action's power. As they say on Top Gear, "How hard could it be?"

When I run my program, all I see is COG_NEUTRAL with a power of zero. And all the while, my app is right next to the Emotiv control panel, showing my Lift and Drop actions in delightfully taunting 3D. <grimace>

To prove to myself that my code is actually being executed, I put counters in the event handlers to show when they are being used. Strangely, engine_CognitivEmoStateUpdated is actually accessed when I activate a Cognitiv action, it just doesn't change the return value from es.CognitivGetCurrentAction(). es.CognitivGetCurrentAction() always returns COG_NEUTRAL no matter what action I manage to invoke.

I've read I'm supposed to load a user profile, but that requires a UserID. Zero and one don't work as a UserID, and I can't find any rational C# way to *get* a UserID out of DotNetEmotivSDK. There's an obvious one for C++, but if there's one for C#, it's eluded me.

So what mind-numbingly simple thing am I missing?

The full solution can be found here: http://www.adrive.com/public/0accfd23...a3d64.html

But for those who trust that I've made a proper solution, here is my code:

====code====
using Emotiv;
using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Text;
using System.Windows.Forms;

namespace WindowsFormsApplication1
{
    public partial class Form1 : Form
    {
        // Start an instance of the Emotive Engine.
        EmoEngine engine =
OS X feature request.

OS X feature request. in forum Emotiv SDK.
I know the OS X version is not here yet, so I figured it was good time to make a feature request. I see .NET in the windows SDK and I would also (strangely) like .NET interface in the OS X version. I use unity3d (unity3d.com) which is now the dominate browser 3d game platform and mid range 3D game platform. Even on OS X and Wii it uses C# and the .NET clone (Mono). So if the same .NET API is available on OS X, I will be able to port my games from OS X (my main dev platform) to windows and eventually iPad if you add an SDK for it with not need to change emotiv code. You'll have to write new DLL for each platform but SDK user won't have to change code.

Cheers,
Grant

SDK needs widgets

SDK needs widgets in forum Emotiv SDK.
Here's a feature request. The Emotiv SDK needs a few widgets for those of us that don't connect to the Control Panel in our apps. Here are the ones that I feel are most critical:

* Vitals - a widget that has a postage stamp sized mini-sensor map like the Control Panel shows on several screens, along with a battery strength meter and a wireless strength meter.

* Blue Girl - a drop-in component that paints the blue girl to an internally managed canvas/bitmap using the same animation commands shown in the Cognitiv example

* Cube - Same as Blue Girl but for the Cube.

Because it was absolutely essential I spent the time to create my own Vitals widget, but obviously that was a solid case of reinventing the wheel and Blue Girl and Cube would be a lot more trouble to duplicate so I'll have to leave those alone.

A good format candidate would be a COM/ActiveX object so the widgets would be usable by many different programming languages, not just C++. That format would also allow most of the popular development environments (at least on Windows) to drop the widget on a Form or other container and give the programmer the ability to size and place the widget where they wanted to.

A quick fix in the interim would be to modify the Control Panel to accept a special command over a remote connection that would hide everything but the Blue Girl or Cube display area, depending on which was specified. That feature combined with another new socket command, one that would allow the caller to set the parent Window Handle of the (Blue Girl | Cube) display area, would allow developers to show the Blue Girl or Cube in a container object on their own form. Another command of course would make the Control Panel repaint itself normally.

-- roschler

Unable to retrieve Cognitiv Action and Power values

Unable to retrieve Cognitiv Action and Power values Except for once in forum Emotiv SDK.
[NOTICE TO READERS: THIS TURNED OUT TO BE A FAULT IN MY CODE, NOT A PROBLEM
WITH THE EMOTIV SDK!]

Well I've got a new problem that's driving me crazy. :evil:

I can't get anything but COG_NEUTRAL and a power of 0 fr om the Emotiv DLL. I can get all the Expressiv and the Affectiv values, battery strength, wireless strength, contact quality array, you name it. But Cognitiv always comes back COG_NEUTRAL and 0 for power. Except there was this one time out of a ton of trials wh ere everything worked exactly like it does in the Control Panel and I have no idea what I did differently since my code was the same between trials.

Are there some initialization calls I need to make to get Cognitiv values reliably? I saw some calls like EE_CognitivSetActiveActions() and other related calls. I would have thought that the Control Panel would take care of that and the sensitivity settings since I am loading the exact same Profile (emu file) into the Control Panel as I do in my code. Note, ES_CognitivIsActive() returns 1 (true) reliably.

The examples really need to be updated. I went to look at the Cognitiv example and much to my dismay the code is based on a remote connect to the Control Panel. Combine this with extended problems I ran into with Gyro due to a lack of a dedicated Gyro example and I'm starting to feel that I should never have dealt with the API directly and should have done a remote connect over a socket. I've lost a lot of time on this new problem and the Gyro handling problems I've had, problems that would have been easily diagnosed by seeing some basic code samples

I know gmac that you will see this and this of course ups the urgency on getting relevant source snippets from the Control Panel posted. If anybody has successfully interfaced with the DLL directly, and not by doing a remote connect, and you reliably retrieved Cognitiv Action and Power, then I'd like to know if you did any other calls besides what I do below:

( Can't add full code. Forum won't let me. Keeps clearing the edit box and redisplaying the page when I hit Create. What's shown below is the excerpted parts that hopefully show enough detail.)

====quote====

// Get the event type and user id.
eventType := FEmotivDLL.EE_EmoEngineEventGetType(FEmoEvent);
FEmotivDLL.EE_EmoEngineEventGetUserId(FEmoEvent, FUserID);

// Something new to process?
if eventType = EE_EmoStateUpdated then
begin
FEmotivDLL.EE_EmoEngineEventGetEmoState(FEmoEvent, FEmoState);

// emoStateFields is a record I created to hold all the relevant EPOC data.

// Cognitiv Suite results
emoStateFields.isActiveCognitiv := (FEmotivDLL.ES_CognitivIsActive(eState) = 1);
emoStateFields.CognitivAction	:= FEmotivDLL.ES_CognitivGetCurrentAction(eState);
emoStateFields.CognitivPower	:= FEmotivDLL.ES_CognitivGetCurrentActionPower(eState);

OutputDebugString(PChar(
'Cognitiv action, power: ' + cognitivTypeToString(emoStateFields.CognitivAction) + ', ' + FloatToStr(emoStateFields.CognitivPower)
));

-- roschler

How can I get the action power of cognitive action?

How can I get the action power of cognitive action? power, cognitive action in forum Emotiv SDK.
I know I can use Emokey to control an external game. But Emokey cannot give me the actual value(power) of each cognitive action.

I then tried the example EmoStateLogger, there are functions ES_CognitivGetCurrentAction(eState), ES_CognitivGetCurrentActionPower(eState). However when I tried the example, the state was always 1 and the value was always 0. I think this probably because I didn't train the user 0 which was used in this example.

So if I want to use the Emotiv Control Plane to train a user, and also I can somehow pass the value of cognitive action to an external program, how can I achieve that?

Thanks.

game idea

game idea in forum Applications & Games.
When going through the examples, i have been thinking of ideas for games to be based around the headset, and i just wanted to present one of them to the community.

One main idea that i was thinking of, would be to make an fps / stealth hybrid type multiplayer game. The crux of it would be that both people with the headsets and people without them would be able to play together, but as different 'classes' of people within the game.

People without the headset would play as the standard grunt with the various types of weapons. and the people with the headset would be able to play as the special forces. The special forces class could have different abilities depending on customization options that the user makes. These could range fr om barriers to stop projectiles, invisibility / cloaking against enemies / allies, elemental attacks like fireballs or lightning attacks to short out electrical equipment, and even a zoom-life function to double as binoculars.

The main part of this idea, is that instead of having a value like most games wh ere it drains as the player uses the ability, the abilities would activate through the concentration of the player, and their skill would determine how long it was last for. This way, the player could train up abilities that they like to use, rather than have hard-coded skill levels determining the factor of success in the game. Partial successes could also be factored in, for when the player is under heavy stress and they lose their concentration, only partial usage of the abilities would be noticed (partial transparancy rather than full cloak). Also, with the constant training, players could end up trying to produce multiple effects at the same time to really turn the tide of battle.

To keep the strength of the special forces down a bit, the normal players could purchase upgrades that would help them when dealing with special forces (heat signatures / sniper rifles to take out special forces from a distance).

Any feedback would be welcomed on this idea, as for now i am just learning how to use the sdk, and trying to find a nice c++ engine to start making the project on. If anyone has any hopeful advice about this, or would like to work on the project together, i would not mind starting a group project based on this idea.

Thanks in advance,
Chrisopher

[edit]
are people without the headset able to buy the games when they are put up on the emotive page? Its just that i dont want this to be an emotive only game, but something that can be enjoyed by everyone (hopefully with the right class balancing :P)
[/edit]
I'm sorry I don't know more about this technology or the principles of EEG, but my desire is this:

====quote====
Have a stripped-down version built with less capability, for less $, with limited detections, that you could run on mobile devices today.

What I'm thinking of is enabling things like changing tunes on the smartphone while riding a bicycle... Volume up, Volume down, Play/Pause, Next, Previous: only a handful of commands derived fr om the "simplest" detections, lim ited by the processing capability of today's mobile devices.

No more fumbling around for your mobile device (...with your gloves on. ... in December.). Also imagine if you could combine this HID with something like a see-through, retractable Virtual Retinal Display: you could see an augmented reality map overlay, see who's calling or texting, see what music is playing, etc. These two could both be contained in a bike helmet!

If that were possible, with sufficient precision, it would create a GREAT product. In fact I think it would be an excellent marketing strategy for Emotiv, as some people have called out for "demos" to see how the thing actually works with their wetware.

Looking forward to hearing why this or that isn't possible... Really REALLY eager to hear how it will be possible.
Thanks!
For those who cannot speak they can communicate.
2. For pet lovers, a dog or a cat can communicate.
3. Theft protection
4. Even government can use this technology in a big conference wh ere you cannot transfer your thoughts publically.

I can find more Please consider to do this application, i do not know how to do it , but i have the idea to share.

My email:jomillergo@gmail.com
